Dawn Disaster: Gas Leak Turns Apartment into Rubble in Turkey

The Tekirdağ province in northwestern Turkey was shaken in the early hours of yesterday (Saturday) by a horrific explosion caused by a natural gas leak in a sixth-floor apartment, resulting in two deaths and two injuries of varying severity.

Video footage captured at the scene documented shocking scenes reflecting the violence of the blast; a large part of the apartment walls collapsed due to the pressure, causing two people to be thrown down to the pavement where they were found dead.

The flying debris and rubble completely shattered the building's facade and caused severe damage to parked cars in the street, making the area look as if it had been bombed on a battlefield.

The area experienced widespread panic as residents of the building and neighboring buildings rushed into the streets in their sleepwear amid screams of terror, while emergency and ambulance teams quickly cordoned off the site to begin rescue operations and inspect the damaged floors.

Amid piles of rubble and dust filling the air, a state of anxiety prevailed as dozens of citizens gathered below, their eyes fixed on the upper floors, while others hurriedly made phone calls to reassure their relatives, tears welling in their eyes.
