(CNN)-- Mohamed ElBaradei, former Egyptian vice president, commented on a post published by the account of Pope Leo XIV, in which he criticized what he described as 'indifference' to the deaths of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea due to corruption and a global system that generates poverty.

The Vatican account said on platform X on Saturday: 'The dead in the Mediterranean Sea are victims of decisions that were taken and others that were not taken: indifference to the common good, corruption in countries of origin, a global economic system that generates poverty and exclusion, and fear that fuels prejudice and contempt.'

He added: 'And the idea that these problems do not concern us, the criminal calculations of those who profit from the tragedies of others, and the slow and difficult transition from mere emergency management to formulating comprehensive and shared policies.'

In response, Mohamed ElBaradei wrote in a post on his official account on platform X: 'Very rarely these days do we hear the voice of humanity. More respect to the Pope.'
