Firefighting teams managed to bring under control a forest fire that broke out in the Moritz National Park in northeastern Germany, after intensive efforts that continued since the fire was reported last Monday.

The authorities relied on a strategy of creating water barriers to moisten the soil and trees in unaffected areas, creating a buffer zone that prevented the spread of the flames.

Expansion of the fire area

A spokesperson for the Mecklenburg Lake District said that the fire consumed an area estimated at about 388 hectares, and about 370 firefighters took part in extinguishing it.

He pointed out that the absence of rain and westerly winds contributed to the expansion of the fire area, noting that the smoke has begun to recede, indicating a decline in fire activity. However, the authorities called on tourists to avoid approaching the area. It is worth noting that the fire had previously led to the evacuation of several villages on multiple occasions.
