New footage showed the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington after a large part of its water was drained for maintenance, a move that revived controversy over a renovation project launched by US President Donald Trump at a cost of $14 million.

The project had faced criticism due to technical problems including algae growth, paint peeling, and other defects.

Trump insists that the basin will be refilled with water soon, and attributed the recent drainage to cracks caused by vandals in the basin's lining.

However, the CNN team that documented the site did not observe clear signs of those cracks, and the network requested further clarifications from the relevant government agencies.
