(CNN)-- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Monday that his country has always been the "guardian of the Strait (Hormuz), and will remain so forever," in response to US President Donald Trump's announcement that Washington would protect the waterway in exchange for a fee.

Araghchi wrote on X platform: "The President [Donald Trump] is absolutely right. Anyone who provides a safe passage for commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz should be compensated."

He then added: "Iran has always been the guardian of the strait, and will remain so forever," then continued: "The 20% figure is undoubtedly exaggerated, and we will be fair."

Earlier on Monday, Trump wrote on Truth Social that the United States would be the "guardian" of the Strait of Hormuz and would impose a fee of 20% of the value of their cargo on commercial ships to compensate the United States for securing the strait.

He said: "The United States of America will henceforth be known as the Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz, but in that capacity, and with fairness, it will be compensated with a 20% charge on all cargo transported, for all costs necessary to carry out the mission of providing safety and security for this very turbulent part of the world."
