Hamas dissolves its government, prepares to hand over Gaza administration
In a notable shift, Hamas announced on Monday the dissolution of its government in Gaza and the completion of preparations to transfer administrative tasks to the Palestinian National Committee for the administration of the Gaza Strip.
Ismail al-Thawabta, Director General of the Government Media Office in Gaza, said during a press conference that Mohammed al-Farra, head of the Government Action Follow-up Committee (Hamas government), and the head of the Government Emergency Committee in Gaza had officially resigned, paving the way for handing over power to the Palestinian National Committee for Gaza administration.
He explained that it was decided to treat the current heads of government institutions as an 'interim body,' noting that all employees working in the government will operate under the responsibility of the National Committee for Gaza administration.
The media office stated that this step comes in the context of transferring governance in the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian National Committee for Gaza administration, and as a new response to the higher interests of our Palestinian people, and in an effort to alleviate the severe suffering of citizens due to the ongoing genocide, delayed reconstruction, continued siege and closure of crossings, and the failure of the Israeli occupation to withdraw from the strip.
Informed sources reported that the movement decided to dissolve its administrative government committee that runs the Gaza Strip, as a goodwill gesture, ahead of handing over its tasks to the National Committee for Gaza administration in the sector.
The national committee, chaired by Ali Shaat, was formed by the Peace Council established by President Donald Trump, after it played a mediation role in the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel last October.
A Hamas source familiar with the matter told AFP that the movement 'decided to dissolve the government committee (Hamas government) in Gaza, and a nationally acceptable figure will be appointed as the director of the committee's affairs, which will become an interim steering committee until the National Committee for Gaza administration officially assumes its governmental tasks in the strip'.
Since the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel took effect in Gaza last October, Hamas has repeatedly affirmed its readiness to step down from managing the sector's affairs and hand them over to the National Committee for Gaza administration, which includes independent competent figures.
This step represents a notable political shift for Hamas since it took control of Gaza in 2007 following military confrontations with the rival Fatah movement led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
A Palestinian faction official who participated in the Cairo talks revealed that Hamas told the factions involved in those meetings last week that it 'had informed the mediators of a goodwill gesture to dissolve the committee'.
He added that the factions 'welcomed Hamas's decision and considered it a serious step toward handing over governmental tasks in Gaza to the national committee headed by Ali Shaat as soon as it arrives'.
The committee's chairman, who previously held government positions, and its members are temporarily residing in Cairo, as Israel has not approved their entry into Gaza, according to a committee member.
