On Friday, the administration of US President Donald Trump extended work permits for hundreds of thousands of migrants with temporary protected status from Haiti and six other countries, just hours before they were set to expire.
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services, part of the Department of Homeland Security, said work permits for Haitians with TPS will remain valid until July 24, while work permits for beneficiaries from Ethiopia, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan, and Myanmar will expire within a week.
The US Supreme Court had ruled last month that the Trump administration could end TPS for citizens of Haiti and Syria.
This status allows people already in the United States to stay and work legally if their home countries are experiencing natural disasters, armed conflicts, or other extraordinary conditions.
Human rights advocates and community members expressed concerns that the Supreme Court decision could deprive hundreds of thousands of people of work permits and protection from deportation.
Labor unions also called for extending work permits, warning that their cancellation could cause 'chaos in the workplace and disruption of key sectors.'
The Trump administration has adopted a strict policy on irregular immigration and deportation campaigns, which human rights organizations have criticized, considering it a violation of freedom of expression and due process rights. These organizations also said these policies created an unsafe environment for ethnic minorities and raised concerns about racial discrimination.
Although Trump ran his 2024 election campaign on a platform aimed at stopping illegal immigration, his administration also tightened legal immigration procedures by imposing new fees on some visa applications and expanding scrutiny of applicants' and migrants' social media accounts.
Trump insists these measures aim to enhance domestic security and protect job opportunities for American citizens.
