Montreal, Sept. 30 / WAM / The International Airports Council expects the number of passengers through airports around the world to reach 9.8 billion passengers in 2025, a 3.7% increase, approaching a historic record of 10 billion passengers, driven mainly by the growth of international travel. The council stated in the annual "Global Airport Traffic Report," which is based on data from more than 2,800 airports in more than 185 countries and territories, that total international travel is expected to grow by 5.3% in 2025, compared to only 2.4% for domestic travel. According to the report, total global passenger traffic rose by 2.1% year-on-year by the first half of this year, with international traffic growing by 4.9% and domestic traffic declining by 0.7%. Regionally, the report expects the number of passengers in Europe to reach more than 2.5 billion passengers in 2025, a 3.6% year-on-year increase; in Asia-Pacific, about 3.6 billion passengers, a 5.6% increase; in North America, about 2.1 billion passengers; in Latin America and the Caribbean, 789 million passengers, a 4.1% increase; the Middle East is expected to record 466 million passengers, a 5.9% increase; while Africa will reach 273 million passengers, a 9.4% increase. Justin Erbacci, Director General of the International Airports Council, said that air travel is on track to reach 9.8 billion passengers in 2025, reflecting the pivotal role of the aviation sector in enhancing global mobility and supporting economic growth.
