Iran denies Axios report on Strait of Hormuz, affirms management decisions coordinated with Oman
A source denied the validity of what the American website Axios reported regarding the Strait of Hormuz, in a statement to Iran's Tasnim news agency, affirming that the strait lies within the internal and territorial waters of both Iran and Oman, and that decisions related to its management are taken exclusively by the two countries.
The source explained that future arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz fall under Iran's responsibility, according to Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, noting that these decisions will be reached through dialogue with Oman.
Regarding the participation of a Qatari representative in the Iranian-Omani talks, the official affirmed that Qatar's presence aligns with its role as a mediator, alongside Iran's exchange of views with other countries in the region, according to Article 5 of the memorandum.
Axios had earlier reported that Iran and Oman are holding discussions on a declaration guaranteeing full and free navigation in the middle corridor of the Strait of Hormuz, indicating the possibility of issuing a statement to open the middle corridor to ships, with Qatari negotiators participating in the talks hosted by the Omani capital, Muscat.
In the same context, Tasnim reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Oman, which plays a mediating role to end the war that has increased instability in the Gulf region and raised global prices since the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on February 28.
The agency added that Araghchi held a meeting with Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi to discuss developments regarding the Strait of Hormuz file, which represents one of the most prominent points of disagreement between Tehran and Washington.
Iranian state media also clarified that Araghchi would discuss 'arrangements related to ensuring safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz,' at a time when Washington seeks a public commitment to freedom of navigation and safe transit.
