The Iranian Foreign Ministry denied allegations of intimidation of French embassy staff in Tehran, which were made by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, describing them as baseless claims.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry, according to IRNA, stressed the need for Paris to bear responsibility for its interventionist behavior towards Iran.

The head of the Second Western Europe Department at the Foreign Ministry, Mohammad Tanhaee, said the French claims are untrue, noting that a report from the competent authorities regarding two French embassy employees who participated in a meeting with a number of wanted security suspects, and were briefly interrogated by security personnel, and multiple documents indicating anti-security activities were found at the scene, and the competent authorities are still investigating the matter.

Tanhaee denied the French foreign minister's allegations that the employees were beaten, explaining that police officers, as soon as they learned the two individuals belonged to the French embassy, transferred them to the diplomatic police headquarters, and after coordination with the Foreign Ministry and their contact with the French ambassador, they were handed over to the embassy.

The head of the Second Western Europe Department at the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that the illegal behavior of the two French embassy employees constituted a violation of the host country's laws and the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, stressing that the French foreign minister, instead of deflecting blame, should take responsibility for the behavior contrary to diplomatic norms by employees of his country's embassy in Tehran.

Tanhaee added that the French foreign minister's claim that these two employees were active in supporting 'civil society' confirms France's interventionist behavior and contradicts recognized diplomatic functions in Iran; France must clarify which international treaty on diplomatic and consular rights allows 'supporting civil society' in the host country.

He stressed: The French government must stop its interventionist behavior, and it must also regulate its policies towards Iran in accordance with the recognized rules governing relations between states.

It is noteworthy that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a phone call last night with his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot, stressed the Islamic Republic of Iran's protest against the unusual and contrary-to-diplomatic-norms actions by two French diplomats in Tehran.

Araghchi affirmed that the actions of the French diplomats are unacceptable, stressing that respecting the laws and regulations of the host country and adhering to internationally recognized diplomatic principles and norms is a fundamental condition for the continued operation of foreign diplomatic missions.
