(CNN)-- Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is expected to visit Tehran next week, just days after meeting US President Donald Trump in Washington, in a visit likely to focus on bilateral relations and rising regional tensions.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced in a statement on Sunday that the visit will include "the signing of several memoranda of understanding in areas of joint cooperation, to strengthen bilateral relations and serve the common interests of the two countries."

This visit comes at a sensitive time, as Baghdad seeks to balance its close ties with Tehran and maintain its strategic relationship with Washington.

The Prime Minister had stated last week that US forces would leave Iraq by September 30, and that Iran-backed militias "would have no justification" to continue their operations after the withdrawal. He made these remarks during a joint meeting with Trump at the White House.

Iraq has long sought to play a mediating role between Iran and the United States, using its relationships with both countries to encourage dialogue and help prevent further regional escalation.
