The governor of Mirjaveh city in Sistan and Baluchestan province (southeastern Iran) announced the killing of Sheikh Mohammad Anwar Rigi, the Sunni imam and preacher of the Ali ibn Abi Talib mosque in the city, following a terrorist attack carried out by unknown gunmen.

Mirjaveh Governor Mokhtar Mohsen Mubaraki condemned the attack, in a statement carried by the IRNA news agency, considering that it aims to undermine security and stability and foment division among the people of Sistan and Baluchestan province.

He affirmed that the security, police and judicial authorities continue to investigate the incident, and that the pursuit, arrest and punishment of the perpetrators are being carried out firmly.

Mubaraki called on citizens to remain calm and vigilant, to rely on official sources for news, and not to allow the incident to be exploited to incite sedition; stressing the need to maintain unity and cohesion among the community.

For his part, Ali Kord, the representative of Khash city in the Iranian Islamic Consultative Assembly, condemned this 'terrorist attack,' calling for firm action against the perpetrators and their supporters.

Kord described the incident as a 'cowardly terrorist attack carried out by criminal mercenaries,' stressing that 'such criminal acts will not undermine the resolve of the border-stationed people of the province, but will increase their unity, solidarity and cohesion.'
