Why are US strikes targeting southern Iran? CNN correspondent answers
As US military strikes against Iran continue, CNN correspondent Leila Gharagozlou explains the reasons for targeting southern Iran.
US strikes have moved from the capital to coastal areas. From the Strait of Hormuz and land trade routes connecting Iran to Iraq and Pakistan, to rich oil fields and agricultural lands, the southern region is a key pillar of Iran's economic and geopolitical strategy.
Iran's main trade routes, ports, nuclear and oil facilities are primarily located in this region, alongside some of its most important military bases.
The chain of islands and strategic cities in this coastal area forms what some experts call the 'defensive arc,' a vital element for Iran's ability to control the Strait of Hormuz.
Ahvaz, Qeshm Island, Kharg Island, Bandar Abbas, Assaluyeh, and Bushehr - all have been targeted by the United States. By targeting these areas, the US can weaken Iran's ability to control the Strait of Hormuz, as well as undermine its capacity to continue oil production and trade.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the attacks were aimed at 'undermining Iranian military capabilities,' making the southern cities the new front line in the war.
