(CNN)-- Regional sources confirmed to CNN on Thursday that Pakistan and Qatar are working to bring the United States and Iran back to the negotiating table.

Pakistan and Qatar were the main mediators in previous negotiations held in Switzerland, which ultimately resulted in the Memorandum of Understanding signed in mid-June. Oman also helped facilitate earlier rounds of diplomatic talks.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry on Wednesday evening called on all parties to exercise restraint and 'refrain from any actions that would further undermine regional peace and stability.'

The ministry said in a statement that 'there is no alternative to continued engagement through dialogue and diplomacy to achieve the common goal of peace in the region.'

It added: 'Pakistan urges all parties to fulfill their obligations under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which remains a solid foundation for mutual understanding, respect, and shared prosperity for the region and beyond.'

Ceasefire collapse

Thursday saw the second day of attacks between the United States and Iran – further undermining the fragile ceasefire. The US military said it struck 90 targets along the Iranian coast overnight. In response, Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it targeted US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held two separate phone calls on Thursday with his Turkish and Omani counterparts, amid the renewed conflict in the region. He also later called Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.

Iran's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that during the calls, the ministers reviewed the latest regional developments, particularly the recent events in the Strait of Hormuz.

The statement added that the parties stressed the importance of fully utilizing diplomatic channels, maintaining continuous communication and coordination to address regional issues, and preventing any escalation of tensions.
