The Maritime Security Center in the Sultanate of Oman announced on Sunday the successful rescue of 23 members of the crew of a commercial vessel that was involved in an accident off the coast of Musandam Governorate.

The center explained that it responded to a distress call from a commercial vessel flying the flag of Cyprus off Musandam, noting that specialized teams continue search operations for a crew member who remains missing, stressing that efforts are ongoing to reach him and complete rescue procedures.

Meanwhile, a maritime authority revealed that the vessel targeted off Musandam suffered a hole and an engine room fire.

An Omani security source had earlier reported that sites in Musandam Governorate in the Sultanate of Oman were targeted by drones, according to the Oman News Agency, without identifying the source of the attacks.

Musandam holds significant strategic importance as it overlooks the Strait of Hormuz, the most important international waterway for oil exports and trade, through which about 90% of Gulf countries' oil exports to the outside world pass, and it is also the eastern gateway for trade and navigation to and from countries bordering the Gulf.

Musandam Governorate is located in the far north of the Sultanate of Oman and overlooks the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as the gateway connecting the Gulf to the open seas of the Sea of Oman and the Indian Ocean, while Musandam includes four wilayats: Khasab, Daba, Bukha, and Madha, with the governorate center being Khasab.
