Sudanese Prime Minister Kamal Idris discussed on Thursday with the African Union Envoy to Sudan Mohamed Belaiche ways to achieve peace and stability in the country and coordinate efforts to end the war.

This came during a meeting between them in the capital Khartoum, according to the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA).

The agency quoted Belaiche as saying that the meeting with Idris addressed 'ways to achieve peace in Sudan and mechanisms for joint coordination to support efforts aimed at enhancing stability and alleviating the suffering caused by the war on citizens.'

He added that the two sides stressed 'the importance of unifying platforms and initiatives aimed at building a new phase characterized by consensus and peace among all Sudanese people.'

The African envoy indicated that the Union's leadership intends to visit Sudan in the coming days, with the aim of developing a shared vision that contributes to achieving peace as soon as possible, meeting the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

These African moves come after the Sudanese government resumed its work from Khartoum in January 2026, and the United Nations agencies officially resumed their operations from their headquarters inside the capital.

Recently, the African Commission decided to conduct a rapid security and political assessment to immediately begin reopening the liaison office that has been closed since the outbreak of war in April 2023.

The African Union is active in Sudan within the Quintet mechanism, which also includes the United Nations, the European Union, the Arab League, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), which sponsors consultations among Sudanese civilian forces aimed at reaching a ceasefire.

Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been waging a war that has left tens of thousands dead and displaced nearly 13 million people, and has exacerbated a humanitarian crisis described as 'among the worst in the world,' according to UN estimates.
