The European Parliament on Thursday called for the inclusion of the Rapid Support Forces on the list of terrorist organizations, holding them responsible for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sudan.

The Parliament, during its plenary session, adopted a resolution on Sudan by a majority of 476 votes to 28, with 96 members abstaining, according to the European Parliament's website.

The resolution condemned 'in the strongest terms' the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Sudan, particularly the violations in the city of El Obeid in North Kordofan State (south), under the siege imposed by the Rapid Support Forces on the city.

The Parliament called on the European Union to include the Rapid Support Forces on its list of terrorist organizations, hold accountable those responsible for violations, conduct an independent investigation into alleged war crimes, and enable the International Criminal Court to expand its jurisdiction to cover all of Sudan.

It also demanded that the European Union urgently enhance its humanitarian aid to Sudan, provide direct funding to local organizations, especially those working in the medical sector, and establish humanitarian corridors to allow the evacuation of civilians and delivery of aid.

The resolution called on the parties to the conflict to stop attacks against civilians, including acts of sexual violence and starvation, and condemned any external interference that fuels the war.

It demanded that states stop all forms of support for the Rapid Support Forces, especially through arms supplies.

It also called for imposing sanctions on those responsible for attacks against civilians, as well as on external parties that facilitate the violation of the UN arms embargo.

The resolution comes days after the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on the situation in El Obeid, ordering an urgent investigation into violations committed there, warning of an imminent risk of large-scale atrocities.

For a month, El Obeid has been witnessing drone attacks by the Rapid Support Forces, targeting the main power station, fuel stations, and other civilian sites, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries.

On May 12, the United Nations warned of an escalation in drone attacks in the Kordofan region, noting that they had killed at least 880 civilians between January and April 2026.

In addition to the Darfur region and Blue Nile State, the three Kordofan states (North, West, and South) have been witnessing continuous battles between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since October 25.

Sudan has been witnessing a war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, following disputes over the integration of the forces into the army, which has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of about 13 million people, according to UN estimates.
