RIYADH — Saudi Arabia welcomed Jordan's plan to start regular commercial flights between Amman and Sanaa, calling it a humanitarian step that will fulfill the needs of the Yemeni people and ease civilian travel.
In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the Yemeni government's approval of the initiative, saying it reflects its commitment to easing procedures that serve Yemeni citizens and support efforts to alleviate humanitarian suffering.
The Kingdom urged the Houthis to respond positively to the initiative instead of repeating past actions that worsened the suffering of the Yemeni people, and called on them to avoid any escalatory measures that could deepen the country's humanitarian crisis.
Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its support for all initiatives that contribute to security and stability in Yemen while preserving the country's sovereignty and fulfilling the aspirations of its people.
The internationally recognized Yemeni government also welcomed the Jordanian initiative and pledged to provide all necessary support to ensure its success.
It said the proposal is fully consistent with previous government initiatives aimed at operating Sanaa International Airport legally and safely through Yemenia Airways, accusing the Houthis of obstructing earlier efforts.
Jordan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Royal Jordanian Airlines will operate regular flights between Amman and Sanaa after completing the necessary technical and logistical arrangements.
The ministry said the initiative supports Saudi Arabia's efforts to advance the peace process in Yemen and implements previous understandings on resuming commercial air services between Jordan and Yemen.
The success of the flights hinges on cooperation from all parties involved. Continued obstruction could exacerbate the plight of Yemeni civilians. Regional observers are closely monitoring diplomatic developments as the situation evolves.
