Sudanese Writer: US Proposal Not Fundamentally Different from Jeddah Agreement
Sudanese writer Mahmoud Laouta said that "the US proposal regarding resolving the Sudan crisis is not fundamentally different from the Jeddah Agreement, with the addition of some points."
Laouta added, in a phone-in to the program "Here Riyadh" broadcast on Al-Akhbariya channel, that "the Rapid Support Forces have expressed their approval of the nine points contained in it, which may open the door for resuming the negotiating track."
He continued, "the return of the Sudanese file to the table of US interest, despite the region's crises, confirms that the United States of America still views Sudan as a file of strategic importance."
The "Jeddah Declaration," signed in May 2023, stipulated commitment to protecting civilians in Sudan, facilitating humanitarian work, and allowing safe passage for civilians to leave areas of active hostilities on a voluntary basis in the direction they choose.
The "Jeddah Declaration" also stipulated differentiation between civilians and combatants, and between civilian objects and military targets, refraining from any attack that is expected to cause incidental civilian damage that would be excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated, and taking all feasible precautions to avoid and minimize harm to civilians.
