Atlanta, USA (CNN) -- US President Donald Trump said that the aircraft gifted to him by Qatar, which was used as a US presidential aircraft, will be sent for upgrades following concerns about its security capabilities.

Upon disembarking from the plane after returning from the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey on Sunday, Trump was asked about the missile defense capabilities of the recently upgraded aircraft.

Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews: 'It has many capabilities, but to my knowledge, it will be sent in about a month or so to be upgraded to its full potential.'

He added: 'It will be sent, and it will be fully upgraded. It will take about a month.'

According to CNN, concerns about the new aircraft, worth $400 million and gifted by Qatar, emerged earlier this month when Trump unexpectedly abandoned it while returning from the NATO summit in Turkey, saying he would send the new plane to RAF Mildenhall in England.

Trump said the change in aircraft was simply to give US service members stationed at the base 'a chance to tour the plane.'

According to CNN, two US officials said security personnel felt more comfortable with the president on board the older aircraft -- which was specifically designed for the commander-in-chief's safety -- unlike the plane that recently underwent upgrades after being donated by Qatar.

Two sources familiar with the matter reported that the newer aircraft does not have the same capabilities to ensure its safety in international airspace, although a third source said it is equipped with many of the same features as the older plane.

The New York Times had previously published reports about security concerns regarding the Qatari aircraft.
