Trump Between War and Peace - Khalid bin Hamad Al-Malik
As Trump begins his second term as president of America, he seemed to be preparing himself to be a leader of peace in the world, and his eye was on the Nobel Peace Prize. Even his partner, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, submitted his nomination letter from Israel for the prize during a lunch at the White House, before the winners were announced and the American president's name was not among them.

The president kept talking, on occasion and otherwise, about roles he played toward establishing peace in the world, and that he succeeded in ending a number of conflicts between nations, resolving outstanding issues between them, and longstanding disputes that everyone had failed to find a solution for before his intervention. He identified eight historical crises that he managed to address, so that the parties now have no conflicts or disputes from now on.

Nice talk, and an acceptable and welcome intervention, as long as it leads to peace, to burying strife, and to building better relations between parties exhausted by wars and conflicts. However, the president's words are one thing, and the reality is another. America has entered as a party in existing conflicts, and by its intervention added fuel to the fire.

In Trump's era, America was a partner in the Gaza war, a party in the Lebanon war, a leader in the war on Iran, and it was the one that invaded Venezuela, arrested its president, and imprisoned him in US jails. In his era, America did not oppose Israel's occupation of Lebanese and Syrian territories, did not intervene to end the war in Sudan, or to bring peace to Yemen, and similarly in Libya and Ukraine.

And what should remind President Trump is that he entered into conflicts with his European allies and with the world by raising taxes and customs duties, and his policy caused the global economy to be affected. He talked about islands he wanted to occupy, and countries he wanted to include for America, and the list goes on, confirming that his approach was limited to 'America First.'

The American president began talking about obligating his allies around the world to pay the costs of his military bases globally, which were originally established to protect America's interests, not to protect the countries where they are located. Previously, America used to pay the countries that allowed it to establish US military bases on their soil, before they became free. Such a measure by the president is inconsistent with what he says about having resolved crises, ended wars, and made peace as no previous American president had done.

America is a great, major, and leading country, indispensable for ending tensions in the world when America has the determination to achieve that. However, what we hope for is not what we see, nor what is happening now on the ground. President Trump's era is creating anxiety and fear more than was the case before his return to the White House.

The atmosphere in our region, as we see it, appears inflamed, dangerous, and threatens worse, as long as Israel and Iran continue to threaten stability, and America has no stance, policy, or approach except to satisfy Israel and encourage its expansion and insistence on not establishing a Palestinian state on internationally recognized Palestinian territories.
