U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday the possibility of expanding the scope of sanctions imposed on Russia to include Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah in the near future.

These statements come amid tense relations between Washington and Moscow, as the U.S. administration seeks to use sanctions as a pressure tool.

In a statement from the White House, Trump said: 'They will add Iran, and that is very important. They may also add Hezbollah.'

Efforts are underway by Republican and Democratic lawmakers to expedite the bill's passage following the death of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who worked for years to pass the new sanctions.

Trump said the bill now 'stands a good chance' of passing once its final details are finalized.

He added: 'Lindsey wanted that badly. This is in his honor.'

Graham died Sunday, and a statement on behalf of the late senator's office said the Graham family 'appreciates the calls at this time and asks for privacy during this very difficult period.'

The proposal to expand sanctions reflects Congress's intention to continue pressuring U.S. adversaries. The bill is expected to spark debate over its effectiveness and impact on international relations. However, the timing also reflects a tribute to Graham, who devoted his efforts to this file.
