(CNN)—US President Donald Trump commented on reports that Iran is planning to assassinate him, according to what informed sources revealed to CNN.

Trump said in a post on his Truth Social page: "There are 1,000 missiles loaded and targeted at the Islamic Republic of Iran, and they will be immediately followed by thousands of other missiles, if the Iranian government carries out its threat—which it has made in various parts of the world—to assassinate (or attempt to assassinate) the current President of the United States of America, i.e., me! Orders have already been given, and the US military is on full alert and fully capable—for a period of one year, renewable—to eliminate and completely destroy all of Iran's regions; and thank God! President Donald J. Trump."

Informed sources had revealed to CNN that Israel informed the United States this week of intelligence information indicating a new and specific Iranian plot to assassinate US President Donald Trump, in a development that may be among the factors that contributed to Washington's decision to resume strikes against Iran.

The sources indicated that the United States had already been tracking ongoing intelligence about potential threats, but the latest Israeli warning included new details about a specific plot.

Many questions are now being raised about the course of this conflict, as the United States and Iran continue to hold technical discussions aimed at reaching a diplomatic solution.

A US official told CNN: "The United States remains committed to finding a solution, and the technical talks are ongoing."

The ceasefire and the ongoing 60-day negotiation period were the only clear exit available to this administration to end this conflict, and it remains unclear what instructions will be given to Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Vice President JD Vance, who are leading these talks at the highest levels, in the next phase.

But US officials believe there are some internal divisions within the Iranian leadership, and this could present a favorable opportunity; however, many officials told CNN that there are preparations for possible US strikes on Iran from Thursday night into Friday.

They say they are leaving the initiative to diplomacy for now.
