US President Donald Trump said that Iran "desperately wants to reach a deal" with the United States, but he does not trust its commitment.

This came in statements made by Trump to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning to the United States from Turkey on Wednesday, after his participation in the 36th NATO Summit.

Speaking about US strikes against Iran, he added: "I told them we would respond twenty times stronger every time they attack us, and we did that last night."

Trump reiterated that Tehran wants to reach a deal with Washington.

He added: "They want a deal badly. They called us recently. But I don't know if they deserve it, and I'm not sure they will stick to any deal, and that's the problem."

In response to a question about Iranian attacks on commercial ships, he replied: "Frankly, that's a bit crazy. They are acting erratically, but they still want a deal badly."

On Wednesday evening, the United States announced strikes against Iran for the second day, while Tehran said it responded with missile attacks on US military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.

** Good trade deals with Turkey

Trump praised the outcomes of the NATO summit in Ankara and commended relations with Turkey, saying: "We had two very great days."

He added: "We made very good trade deals with Turkey, and it was a very good partner."

He also described Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying: "He was wonderful."

** Praise for NATO summit in Ankara

Trump affirmed that European member states of the alliance took important steps to increase their defense spending.

He continued: "There was a great deal of unity and solidarity today. NATO has come a long way indeed."

He noted that the United States had borne an unfair financial burden within the alliance for years, and that European countries agreed to increase their defense spending.

Turkey hosted the NATO summit on Tuesday and Wednesday for the second time after the 2004 Istanbul summit, and the summit was of great importance given the challenges facing the alliance and the global security system.
