US President Donald Trump revealed that the United States granted Iran a one-week grace period to hold the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, saying the decision came 'out of kindness', coinciding with the start of official funeral ceremonies in Tehran amid massive public participation, while asserting that Iranians are 'very eager' to reach a deal.

Trump said on the sidelines of the US celebration of the 250th anniversary of independence that Iranians are strongly looking forward to reaching an agreement, adding, 'They are eager for a settlement. They want a settlement very badly. We gave them a week off for Ali Khamenei's funeral because we are kind.' The US President added, 'We defeated Venezuela in one day, and taught Iran a harsh lesson.'

Trump's remarks coincided with the start of funeral ceremonies for the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Saturday in the Iranian capital Tehran, more than four months after his killing on the first day of the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Iranian authorities said they expect between 15 and 20 million people to participate in the funeral ceremonies within Tehran alone.

They added that the funeral ceremonies will last six days, and will include stops in Iraq, before Khamenei's body is buried in the city of Mashhad in northeastern Iran.
