US President Donald Trump said that the newly appointed British Prime Minister Andy Burnham faces a great task, but he will be able to accomplish it, and pledged that the United States would offer assistance.

The British news agency PA Media reported that Trump said in a message on the Truth Social platform that he wished Burnham "good luck and success."

Trump's congratulations came after he spoke with Burnham by phone within an hour of his arrival at the British government headquarters.

Trump said, "I had a good conversation with the new UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham."

He added, "We discussed several issues, including the existing relationship with the United Kingdom."

He clarified, "We will meet in the near future to discuss issues of common interest."

Burnham became Britain's seventh prime minister in a decade on Monday, pledging to reshape British politics to offer a new economic model and revive a nation "tired" of the frequent turnover of leaders.

Trump criticized former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the US-Israeli war on Iran as well as immigration, energy, and technology sector regulation.

Burnham's office said he assured Trump that London would commit to defense and security and would support the safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed since the start of the war, causing energy prices to rise.

Relations between Trump and Starmer became tense when Britain initially rejected a US request to use British bases for strikes on Iran, and Starmer later authorized the United States to use the bases.

Trump said late last month that he knew little about Burnham, describing him as "very liberal" and a person who would likely not open the North Sea for more oil drilling.
