The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Tuesday condemned the Israeli army's recent 'intensification' of its attacks in the Gaza Strip, which it said killed at least 57 people between July 13 and 20.

Nine months after the ceasefire was announced, commission spokesman Thamien Al-Kheitane told reporters in Geneva that 'there is still no safe place for Palestinians in Gaza,' expressing regret that the Israeli army had 'intensified' its attacks on the strip in recent days, resulting in 'dozens killed and wounded.'

He explained that the strikes targeted residential buildings, at least one tent sheltering displaced people, and other densely populated areas.

He stated that Israeli attacks between July 13 and 20 killed 'at least 57 Palestinians, including six children and eight women,' with 34 of them killed away from the 'yellow line' separating areas controlled by Hamas from those under Israeli army control.

He added that 'the killing of civilians in these attacks raises concerns about continued violations of international humanitarian law and the commission of war crimes and other possible atrocity crimes in Gaza,' and continued that 'the deliberate attack on civilians is a war crime under international law.'

The Israeli army announced in recent days that it had carried out a series of strikes in Gaza targeting, according to it, members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad whom it claimed were involved in the October 7, 2023 attack or in holding hostages.

The army said it targeted a weapons warehouse, a manufacturing site, and a rocket launch site, noting that these facilities posed a threat to its forces.

The Israeli army confirmed carrying out the airstrike, saying it targeted a Hamas militant, and that it is still checking the results of the attack.

In separate strikes since Friday, the Israeli army said it killed three militants from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, two of whom participated in the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel and held Israeli hostages who were taken to Gaza during that attack.

According to Gaza health officials, the death toll from Israeli attacks since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect in October has risen to more than 1,150 Palestinians.

Hamas usually does not disclose its own casualties.

The ceasefire agreement halted large-scale fighting, but it did not stop the almost daily Israeli strikes. Israel says it targets militants and that four of its soldiers have been killed by militants in Gaza since the agreement took effect.

The war broke out after Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, which says the attack killed 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages. Gaza health officials say the subsequent Israeli offensive has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians.

Almost all of Gaza’s two million residents now live in a narrow coastal strip under Hamas control, most of them in temporary tents or damaged buildings.
