U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) refuted Iranian claims about targeting the al-Tanf base in southeastern Syria, confirming that no U.S. soldier was killed or captured in the region.
In a statement on platform X, today (Friday), CENTCOM confirmed that the allegations of targeting the al-Tanf garrison and capturing or killing U.S. soldiers are 'untrue,' adding: 'No U.S. soldier has been killed or captured in the region recently.'
Iran's Revolutionary Guard had claimed to have targeted what it described as an 'operations command center' belonging to U.S. forces in the al-Tanf area. A Syrian military source denied to AFP that the al-Tanf area had been subjected to any Iranian shelling, saying: 'We deny any Iranian shelling towards the al-Tanf area.'
Another Syrian military source told the German Press Agency (dpa) that the al-Tanf area had not been subjected to any missile strikes, explaining that Syrian border guard forces have been deployed at the site since the withdrawal of U.S. forces from it last February and their move to Tower 22 inside Jordanian territory.
He pointed out that the area surrounding al-Tanf had become desert and uninhabited after the departure of residents of the Rukban camp, and stated that the site currently includes the al-Tanf border crossing and some administrative buildings.
Iran has so far provided no evidence to support its announcement regarding targeting the site, while its statements contradict the denials issued by both U.S. Central Command and Syrian military sources.
