Widespread Arab Condemnations of Iranian Strikes.. and Calls to Resume Dialogue
(CNN)-- Several Arab countries strongly condemned the wide-scale Iranian strikes that targeted US allies in the region, after the administration of US President Donald Trump escalated its attacks on Iran this week.
The Iranian army launched attacks from late Thursday evening until the early hours of Friday, targeting several countries, including Oman, Jordan, Kuwait, and Qatar, where a child was injured by shrapnel from an intercepted missile.
In Iraq, an Iranian attack with missiles and drones killed nine fighters from an Iranian Kurdish group, according to a group official.
Leaders in the region issued strong condemnations of the attacks and renewed their call to resort to the diplomatic path, at a time when the United States and Iran show no signs of backing down from escalation.
The following are the most prominent positions:
Qatar: The Qatari Foreign Ministry, whose officials played a key role in mediation between Tehran and Washington earlier this year, called for a "serious return to dialogue and negotiations" and "commitment to the understandings reached through diplomatic efforts."
UAE: The UAE Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the Iranian strike that targeted Iraq, warning that it represents a "flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the Republic of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq."
Jordan: The Jordanian Foreign Ministry condemned the "brutal Iranian attacks" and described them as a "flagrant violation of international law," warning of a "dangerous escalation" in the region.
Kuwait: The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry expressed its "strong condemnation and denunciation of the sinful Iranian attacks" that targeted Bahrain, Qatar, and Jordan, describing those attacks as a "flagrant violation of the sovereignty of these states and their territorial integrity, and a direct threat to the security of their peoples."
Bahrain: The Foreign Ministry expressed "the Kingdom of Bahrain's strong condemnation and denunciation of the repeated sinful Iranian attacks that targeted civilian and vital facilities in the Kingdom, the State of Kuwait, the State of Qatar, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan with missiles and drones, considering them a dangerous escalation that threatens the safety of civilians and regional security and stability, and a flagrant violation of the rules of international law, the United Nations Charter, and the principles of good neighborliness."
Saudi Arabia: The Saudi Foreign Ministry expressed the Kingdom's strongest condemnation of the continued unjustified Iranian attacks on the State of Kuwait, the Kingdom of Bahrain, and Jordan, affirming its full solidarity with the brotherly states in the measures they take to confront these aggressions.
Egypt: The Egyptian Foreign Ministry expressed Egypt's strongest condemnation of the continued Iranian attacks that targeted Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan, considering them a "very dangerous escalation that would undermine the security and stability of the region, and represents a violation of the sovereignty of states and an infringement on their security and the safety of their residents."
