American billionaire Jeff Bezos is considering joining an investment alliance in talks to acquire a minority stake in Liverpool FC, in a deal that could raise the value of the English Premier League champion to more than $6 billion.

According to Sky News, the alliance, led by Amit Bhatia, co-owner of Queens Park Rangers, and backed by the family of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, continues discussions with Bezos to participate in the deal, but his involvement has not yet been finalized.

Ongoing talks

The alliance has begun talks with Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owner of Liverpool FC, regarding the purchase of a minority stake in the club.

According to the Financial Times, the deal could give Liverpool a valuation exceeding $6 billion, while FSG confirmed that an alliance led by Bhatia has expressed interest in a strategic investment in the club.

Sports interest

Forbes magazine estimates Bezos's net worth, founder of Amazon and owner of Blue Origin and The Washington Post, at approximately $257 billion.

Bezos has previously studied opportunities to acquire the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders in the National Football League (NFL), but has not completed any deal.

American investments

The interest in Liverpool reflects the continued flow of American investments into the English Premier League, with American investors controlling nearly half of the league's clubs.

FSG acquired Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million, while the potential deal could reflect the club's value rising to more than $6 billion.

Similar deal

The deal may follow the investment model of Dynasty Equity in 2023, when it invested about $200 million for a minority stake as a passive investor, using the proceeds to reduce debt and finance capital expenditure, without allocating it to fund player transfer deals.

In a step that may pave the way for the deal, Bhatia exited his ownership in Queens Park Rangers by selling his stake to Ruben Gnanalingam, while Bezos's joining the alliance remains contingent on converting ongoing talks into a final agreement.
