ECB President: 'You will not see my departure before 2027'
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde confirmed on Thursday that she will continue to perform her duties in her position for the next year, amid growing speculation about her possible early departure, saying that 'the captain stays on the ship' in times of turbulence.
Asked about her commitment to completing her term which ends in October 2027, Lagarde said she does not like to be pinned down to a specific position. She added during a press conference following the ECB's decision to keep key interest rates at 2.25 percent: 'I said earlier that when turbulence intensifies, the captain stays on the ship, and this captain will stay on this ship. You will not see my departure before 2027.'
Earlier this month, Lagarde had hinted at the possibility of leaving her post before the end of her term to engage in French political affairs, but she confirmed that running in the French presidential election scheduled for next spring is not on her plans 'at this stage.'
