US President Donald Trump threatened the European Union with imposing massive tariffs and launching an immediate trade investigation in response to European fines totaling about $1 billion on Google.

Trump said via his account on platform "X" that these practices against major technology companies will not continue under his administration.

The US president stressed that the United States "is not a 'piggy bank' for Europe, and we will not allow it to be so."

Trump said his administration will immediately initiate "an investigation under Section 301 into the practice of 'pillaging' American companies, and thus American taxpayers."

On Thursday, the European Union fined Google €460 million for favoring its own services in search results, and €430 million for restricting companies from directing consumers to alternative purchasing channels on the Google Play store.
