US Forces Target Southern Coasts of Iran on Eighth Night of Escalation
The US Central Command announced airstrikes on Iranian coastal monitoring, air defense, naval, and missile storage sites for the eighth consecutive night, while Iranian media reported explosions in southern cities.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Sunday morning that its forces, on the eighth consecutive night of strikes on Iran, targeted Iranian coastal surveillance facilities, air defenses, naval capabilities, and missile and drone storage sites, "as part of continuing to undermine Iranian military capabilities."
Iran's Tasnim news agency, citing a local official, reported Sunday morning that the US military targeted a site near Shadegan in southwestern Iran, while the Iranian state news agency IRNA reported Saturday that several explosions were heard in the cities of Bandar Abbas and Qeshm in southern Iran.
Iran's Mehr news agency said the US military launched attacks near the city of Sirik in Iran. Media also reported that the US military targeted an area near the city of Hajiabad.
CENTCOM also indicated that US forces targeted "members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps" who it said participated in attacks on US forces in Jordan, noting that more than 50,000 US troops are deployed across the Middle East.
The Central Command stated in a statement Saturday evening that Iranian strikes on a site in Jordan killed two US soldiers, while a third soldier remains missing, marking the first US military casualties from Iranian fire since March.
The Central Command statement read: "On July 17, two US service members in Jordan were killed while US Central Command and partner forces were repelling Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks," adding that "one service member remains unaccounted for."
It added that four other US service members were taken to hospitals in Jordan but later discharged, while others sustained minor injuries and returned to duty.
US President Donald Trump described the death of the two US soldiers as "very sad," adding in remarks to NewsNation: "We hate to see that happen; they were doing their duty serving our country."
Unexpected Escalation
Trump reiterated that the primary goal of the war is "to prevent Iran from possessing a nuclear weapon at any cost," and in response to a question about Iran's announcement that it is no longer bound by the "memorandum of understanding" with the United States, Trump said: "I don't care at all."
Meanwhile, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth commented on the news in a post on X, saying: "Your sacrifice only strengthens our resolve."
The Central Command stated in a statement Saturday evening that the eighth round of strikes on Iran aims to "swiftly punish the Revolutionary Guard" for killing US service members.
The US State Department issued a global warning to US travelers abroad on Saturday, citing rising tensions in the Middle East "with the potential for unexpected escalation." The warning stated that flight cancellations and periodic airspace closures could disrupt travel.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps earlier Saturday claimed responsibility for strikes in Jordan, alleging it destroyed a number of US aircraft in an attack it said was carried out using missiles and drones.
The number of US service members killed during the conflict, which has lasted about five months, has risen to 16, according to CNN, citing the US Department of War's Casualty Analysis System.
Earlier Saturday, Iranian officials said 12 Iranians had died in the past 24 hours, raising the toll in the latest phase of the war to more than 50.
