(CNN)-- Egyptian actor Ahmed Galal Abd El-Kawi died after a battle with illness at the age of 42, and his brother Mohamed announced the news of his death via his personal Facebook page on Sunday.

According to the late actor's brother, his body will be laid to rest from Al-Hosary Mosque in 6th of October City, Giza Governorate, after Asr prayer on Sunday. His family will receive condolences at the mosque, in the cemetery, or via messages 'due to the circumstances' the family is going through.

Ahmed had previously announced that he was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his diaphragm and underwent a period of treatment and medical follow-up, according to the Egyptian state-run website Al-Ahram Gate.

The late actor began his short artistic career at approximately age 13, when he participated in the series 'Hayat Al-Johary' in 1997 starring actress Yousra. He later appeared in two famous Egyptian series: 'Hadith Al-Sabah wa Al-Masaa' in 2001 and 'Al-Layl wa Akhruh' in 2003.

He achieved great fame when he played the role of 'Ahmed', son of 'Abdelhamid Deraz' portrayed by the late artist Nour El-Sherif in the famous series 'Hadrat Al-Muttaham Abi' in 2005.

Ahmed explained the reason for his career's stalling after the great fame he achieved as 'laziness, procrastination, and arrogance,' in addition to his suffering from a period of 'addiction' to narcotic drugs, as he revealed during his appearance on the show 'Kalam El-Nas' with Yasmine Ezz on MBC Egypt about two years ago.

He explained at the time that he underwent back surgery to replace three vertebrae and took strong painkillers during his treatment, which later led to 'drug addiction'. He suffered from what he described as 'addictive behavior' that lasted for four years.

The late actor also appeared in the film 'Hassan wa Morqos' in 2008 and a limited number of series. He gave his last role in the joint Arab series 'Sane' al-Ahlam' in 2019, according to elcinema.com.
