Jazan region holds a prominent position in the Saudi cultural landscape, where its rich historical heritage and deep-rooted cultural diversity form the most prominent features of its identity, contributing to enriching the national scene with performing and folk arts that continue across generations.

Issa Ghazawi, director of the Saudi Arabian Society for Culture and Arts branch in Jazan, explained that the region hosts more than 35 performing and folkloric genres, distributed across the three natural environments: plains, mountains, and sea, noting that these arts are still practiced and passed down through generations.

Geographical and Cultural Diversity Boosts Folk Arts

Ghazawi stated that the plains genres include Al-Saif, La'ab Al-Azawi, Al-Maasha, Al-Zeifa, Al-Dala', Al-Damma, Al-Ardha Al-Jazania, Al-Zamil, Al-Jaish, Al-Rabash, Al-Khatwa, and Al-Tariq. As for the mountain environment, it features genres such as Al-Hassa'a, Al-Dawriyya, Al-Sharqi, Al-Takthira, Al-Marbakha, Al-Rawha, Al-Shahriyya, Al-Tarq, Al-Hadi, Al-Damma, Al-Barha, Al-Safqa, and Al-Ardha.

In the same context, the marine environment contributed to the emergence of arts linked to sea life and fishing, most notably Al-Dana Al-Farsania, Al-Saif, Al-Dala', Al-Ardha, Al-Zamil, Al-Zeifa, Al-Nabiyya, Al-Zuraibi, Al-Maqtouf, Al-Anab, and the art of Al-Kasser, in addition to other arts that continue to have an active presence in the region.

Growing Cultural Movement and Empowering Talents

A report indicated that recent years have witnessed a growing cultural movement in Jazan, reflected in expanding community participation in cultural activities, organizing festivals and events, supporting creative initiatives, and empowering talented individuals, which reflects the commitment to developing the cultural sector, preserving the heritage, and presenting it to generations in modern ways that maintain its authenticity.

It is noteworthy that folk arts in Jazan are among the most prominent forms of expressing local identity, as they document aspects of the region's social history, values, and customs, and remain part of the popular memory of its people.
