The World Health Organization issued new guidelines on Wednesday to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia, stressing that up to 45% of cases can be prevented or delayed by modifying risk factors related to lifestyle and chronic diseases.

The organization called for increased physical activity, quitting smoking, following a healthy diet, reducing exposure to air pollution, along with controlling high blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol, and engaging in mental and social activities.

More than 57 million people live with dementia globally, with about 10 million new cases recorded annually, while the economic cost of the disease is about $1.3 trillion per year.
