A joint scientific medical team from Jazan Health Cluster and Taif Health Cluster, under the supervision of Dr. Maymoun bin Mohammed Madkhali, announced its success in detecting and molecularly characterizing the rare blood type (D--) of the Rh system in a blood donor in Saudi Arabia. This type is characterized by the presence of the D antigen and the absence of the other major antigens of the Rh system, and is considered one of the rarest blood types recorded globally.

This achievement was crowned by the publication of the study in one of the specialized scientific journals in blood transfusion, under the title:

“First Detection and Molecular Characterization of the Rare Blood Type (D--) in a Blood Donor in Saudi Arabia”

The journey of identifying the case began with initial serological tests conducted at King Faisal Medical Complex in Taif, before being referred to the Regional Blood Bank in Jazan, where it underwent a series of confirmatory tests and advanced serological and molecular studies, leading to comprehensive characterization of the blood type and determination of its genetic and immunological properties.

The study clarified that, according to the review of scientific literature, this is the first published scientific report documenting this rare blood type in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, representing an important scientific addition in the field of transfusion medicine.

This achievement contributes to enhancing knowledge of the genetic diversity of blood groups, supporting blood transfusion safety, and developing programs for donors with rare blood types, as well as improving patient care and raising the quality of health services according to the best global practices.

For his part, Dr. Maymoun bin Mohammed Madkhali expressed his thanks and appreciation to all members of the scientific team and participating entities, stressing that this achievement reflects the importance of integration among health centers in supporting scientific research and developing blood transfusion services, contributing to enhancing the quality of healthcare and achieving the goals of the health sector in the Kingdom.
