The fire department in the Japanese capital announced that heatstroke injuries in Tokyo have risen to 287 people amid a severe heatwave hitting the country.

The department reported - as stated by the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) on Wednesday - that the injured, aged between 3 and 10 years old, were taken to hospitals in Tokyo after showing symptoms of heatstroke, noting that ten of them are in critical condition.

Dangerous levels of heat

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of continued temperature rises to dangerous levels today in vast areas of the country, and also warned of heatstroke in 41 out of 47 prefectures, stretching from the Tohoku region to Okinawa Prefecture. The agency advised citizens to avoid staying outdoors for long periods, use air conditioners, and drink sufficient fluids.
