Ebola toll in DR Congo rises to 2,181 infections and 864 deaths
The Ministry of Communication and Media in the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced that the total confirmed Ebola cases has risen to 2,181, compared to 864 deaths recorded so far.
The World Health Organization had declared on May 17 last year that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda constituted a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, warning that the virus poses a threat to other countries in the region, and the organization classified the risk of regional spread as high.
In June last year, the World Health Organization and the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched a comprehensive preparedness and response plan for the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak, a strain of Ebola virus, and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that funding for this plan requires $518 million.
