Ebola cases in DR Congo rise to 2,181, deaths reach 864
The Ministry of Communication and Media of the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced today, Saturday, that the number of confirmed Ebola cases in the country has risen to 2,181, with 864 deaths.
A ministry statement explained that the figures include only confirmed cases to date, as efforts to combat the spread of the virus continue.
Meanwhile, on May 17, the World Health Organization indicated that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda constitutes a public health emergency, stressing that it poses a risk to other countries in the region.
In the same context, the WHO assesses the regional risk of spread as high and, in collaboration with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, launched a preparedness and response plan for the Bundibugyo virus disease (Ebola strain) last June.
It is worth noting that the WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that funding the response plan requires $518 million.
