Extraction of 'Lithium Battery' from Esophagus at Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital in Al Suwaidi

By God's grace, an endoscopic procedure to extract a 'lithium' toy battery from the esophagus saved the life of a one-year-old child. The medical intervention was performed using the retrieval basket technique at Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital in Al Suwaidi. Dr. Abdullah Kamil, Consultant Pediatric Emergency and head of the treating medical team, reported this.
Dr. Kamil said that the child arrived at the hospital's pediatric emergency department after showing symptoms of nausea, drooling, and refusal to feed. The child was examined, and several tests and X-rays were performed. The X-ray images revealed a foreign body in the esophagus, which was a lithium battery that had caused third-degree burns in the esophagus. The case was studied, and Dr. Abdulrahman bin Khalid, Consultant Pediatric Gastroenterologist, was urgently called. An emergency endoscopy was performed on the child, during which the battery was removed from the esophagus using an endoscopic retrieval basket. The medical intervention lasted 20 minutes and proceeded smoothly according to the treatment plan, and, praise be to God, it was completely successful.
He continued, saying that the procedure spared the child many serious complications, as batteries contain small lithium material that poses a medical risk. They can lead to esophageal perforations, severe ulcers, adhesions, and obstruction of the digestive tract, often requiring immediate surgical intervention. It is not recommended to wait for them to pass naturally because once they enter the esophagus, they begin to react with surrounding fluids, causing an electrical current that triggers chemical reactions, which may result in grave consequences, possibly death in some cases, God forbid.
