The maxillofacial surgery team at Sabya General Hospital ended the suffering of a patient in her fourth decade after removing a rapidly growing benign fibrous bone tumor in the lower jaw and rebuilding it using a portion of hip bone fixed with a titanium plate, in a 5-hour successful operation as part of the Jazan Health Cluster's efforts to enhance specialized surgeries.
The maxillofacial surgery team at Sabya General Hospital, a component of the Jazan Health Cluster, successfully performed a unique surgical operation to remove a rapidly growing benign fibrous bone tumor and reconstruct the lower jaw of a patient in her fourth decade, achieving an achievement that reflects the development of specialized surgical services in the region.
The medical team explained that the patient was referred from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases at the Jazan Dental Center after the appearance of a tumor in the lower jaw. She underwent precise clinical and radiological examinations along with a tissue biopsy, which confirmed she had a benign fibrous bone tumor that replaces normal bone with calcified tissue, and could lead to deformities and functional disorders of the jaw if not treated in time.
The comprehensive treatment plan developed by the team included removing the affected part of the lower jaw with a safe margin of healthy tissue to reduce the chance of recurrence, then rebuilding the jaw using a portion of hip bone fixed with a titanium plate, which helped restore the natural shape and vital functions of the jaw.
The operation took about 5 hours, was performed according to precise surgical planning, and was successful. The patient left the hospital after her condition stabilized and initial recovery was completed, and she is currently under a regular follow-up program to ensure the best treatment outcomes.
This achievement is part of the Jazan Health Cluster's efforts to enhance specialized surgical services and improve healthcare quality, in line with the goals of the Kingdom's health sector transformation program.
