Successful implantation of deep brain stimulation device for patient with essential tremor at Saudi German Hospital
In a new achievement, the neurosurgery team at Saudi German Hospital Riyadh performed a precise procedure to implant a deep brain stimulation (DBS) device for a young patient suffering from essential tremor, which had significantly affected his ability to carry out daily activities.
Before the surgery, the patient suffered from severe tremors that made it difficult to perform simple daily tasks such as eating, drinking, writing, and dressing, which impacted his ability to live without assistance.
The medical team explained that the procedure was, praise be to God, successful, as the results showed a very significant improvement in tremor control, enabling the patient to regain the ability to carry out his daily life better.
Deep brain stimulation implantation is a precise and advanced surgical procedure that requires a multidisciplinary medical team including a neurosurgeon, an anesthesiologist specialized in neurosurgery, a neurophysiologist, and a radiology technician.
The first stage of the procedure is performed while the patient is awake, to determine the optimal location for implanting the deep brain stimulation electrodes using advanced neuronavigation techniques, supported by stereotactic systems, as well as a stereotactic frame, to ensure precise access to the brain nuclei responsible for the tremor.
The second stage was performed under general anesthesia and involved implanting the pulse generator and connecting it to the implanted electrodes to complete the deep brain stimulation system.
This achievement is an extension of the successes achieved by the hospital in all its departments and qualified medical staff, including the neurosurgery department, in performing specialized and precise procedures, contributing to the provision of advanced healthcare that adds to the rare and complex surgeries at Saudi German Hospital Riyadh.
