The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing recorded a 1% growth last year in the implementation and operation of 991 projects of bridges, tunnels, and pedestrian bridges across various regions and governorates of the Kingdom, compared to 983 projects in 2024. This step reflects the continued development of urban infrastructure, enhancing the efficiency of transport networks and safe mobility within cities. Bridges accounted for 52% of the projects implemented, compared to 32% for pedestrian bridges and 16% for tunnels, while four regions—Qassim, Jazan, Northern Borders, and Hafar Al-Batin—were absent from tunnel projects, recording zero tunnel projects implemented, while three regions and cities dominated bridges, pedestrian bridges, and tunnels. The role of municipalities: The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing and its affiliated municipalities play a pivotal role in planning, implementing, and supervising bridge, tunnel, and pedestrian bridge projects, ensuring the development of urban infrastructure and raising the efficiency of road networks within cities and governorates. They work to identify high-traffic areas, study the needs of residents, and implement projects according to safety, quality, and sustainability standards. These projects contribute to many benefits, most notably alleviating traffic congestion, improving traffic flow, reducing daily travel times, and raising traffic safety levels by providing safe crossings for pedestrians and reducing accidents. Tunnels and bridges also contribute to linking neighborhoods and vital centers, facilitating access to services and public facilities, and supporting economic and investment development by easing the movement of individuals and goods, increasing mobility efficiency within cities, and enhancing quality of life and improving the urban landscape, making cities more attractive to residents and visitors. These projects represent a fundamental pillar in building modern and sustainable cities, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 aimed at developing infrastructure and improving the living and mobility experience in Saudi cities. Implemented projects: The Ministry of Municipalities' report for 2025 revealed that bridges led the projects with 514 bridges, accounting for about 51.9% of total structures, followed by pedestrian bridges with 317 bridges at 32%, then tunnels with 160 tunnels at 16.1% of the total. At the regional level, Asir region led the Kingdom in terms of number of bridges with 131 bridges, reflecting the scale of urban expansion and the need to connect neighborhoods and main roads in the region with its diverse geographical nature. Makkah topped the number of tunnels with 60 tunnels, which is related to the high population density and heavy traffic the region witnesses, in addition to its specificity in serving pilgrims. In contrast, Jeddah ranked first in pedestrian bridges with 51 bridges, in a trend aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety, reducing traffic accidents, and improving quality of life in the city.
