Rock cavities in the Asir region stand out as a natural phenomenon reflecting a geological history spanning thousands of years, contributing to the formation of water reservoirs that preserve rainwater among mountain peaks and granite formations.

A report explained that these cavities form through successive natural processes affecting hard rocks, starting with fine cracks that gradually expand under the influence of climate change and water flow, turning into rock basins of various shapes and depths that receive seasonal floods from surrounding slopes.

It noted that the basins fill with water each rainy season, with water remaining for varying periods due to the rocky nature and depth of the cavities, providing a natural resource for wild plants and wildlife, especially during dry spells.

Natural Record and Geological Diversity

The report added that the importance of rock cavities goes beyond their environmental dimension, as they represent a natural record of the region's terrain formation history and reveal the impact of weathering and erosion factors in shaping the mountains, highlighting the geological diversity of the Asiri highlands.

Meanwhile, the report pointed out that these sites have become a destination for nature and photography enthusiasts, offering scenes that combine clear water with rock gradients and vegetation, especially after rainfall, in images reflecting the beauty and diversity of the mountain environment.

Prominent Sites and Natural Heritage

In the same context, rock cavities are spread across several sites in Asir, most notably Ghayyah village atop Jabal Tahwi, and Rahwat Al Sumaid in Khat Center in Al Majardah Governorate, in addition to sites in the Tanumah mountains, where these formations are part of the region's distinctive natural heritage.

It is noteworthy that this geological phenomenon confirms Asir's abundance of natural assets combining environmental, scientific, and tourism value, reflecting nature's ability to provide sustainable solutions for water conservation in mountain environments, thereby enhancing the region's natural richness and diversity.
