Saudi Arabia presents a different model that combines technology, trust, and a medical system advancing regionally and globally.
In the middle of a summer night, a father wakes up to his child's high fever, a man feels a sudden pain in his chest, or a woman tries to understand a medical test result that arrived on her phone before her doctor's appointment.

Years ago, the first step was to call a doctor or head to the nearest hospital. Today, however, the scene in many cases begins differently; a hand reaches for the phone, and a question is typed to one of the artificial intelligence chatbots: What do these symptoms mean? Do they warrant an emergency room visit?
This scene is no longer an exception; it has become a daily reality repeated millions of times around the world, including in the Arab world. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, these systems are no longer limited to answering general questions; for many people, they have become the primary gateway to obtaining health information before deciding to visit a doctor.
However, the most important question is no longer: How many people use artificial intelligence? Rather, it has become: Why do people turn to it? And does this reflect the evolution of health systems, the difficulty of accessing them, or a shift in society's behavior and trust in sources of information?
To answer these questions, a recent global study has provided the first comprehensive map of how residents of more than a hundred countries use artificial intelligence to search for health information, revealing striking differences between countries while raising an even more important question for us: Where does the Arab world stand in this transformation, and can Saudi Arabia become the regional model for smart healthcare?
A global study maps the use of artificial intelligence to obtain health information
The first global map based on 1.7 million conversations
The answer came in a recent study published in the journal Nature Health on July 15, 2026, considered one of the largest studies addressing the behavior of artificial intelligence users in the health field. Researchers analyzed approximately 1.7 million anonymized health conversations conducted via the Microsoft Copilot platform across 109 countries and regions, to draw the first global map showing how and why people turn to chatbots when searching for health information.
The analysis was not limited to the number of questions; it also addressed their nature, ranging from inquiries about symptoms and diseases, through mental health and lifestyle, to interpreting test results, understanding medical reports, academic research, and even assistance in navigating health systems.
Declining public trust in hospitals leads to increased use of artificial intelligence
However, the most intriguing finding was not related to a country's income level or internet penetration, but to a less expected factor: trust in health institutions. The study showed that countries where citizens have lower trust in their hospitals experience—on average—higher rates of resorting to artificial intelligence chatbots for health information. This does not mean that artificial intelligence has become a substitute for a doctor, or that weak trust is the direct cause, but it indicates that a person seeks an immediate answer when they feel that accessing medical information is neither easy nor fast enough.
The Arab world is not a single health map
The Arab map derived from the study reveals that the Arab world does not represent a single health model; rather, it is a collection of health systems that vary in their level of digital development, ease of access to services, and community trust in their medical institutions. Therefore, it is natural that the way citizens turn to artificial intelligence for health information also differs.
In some countries, a user might open a chatbot to understand an MRI result, inquire about the latest treatment options, or determine the most appropriate specialty for their condition. In other countries, the question might be more urgent: Do these symptoms require going to the hospital? Can I postpone the doctor's visit? What initial treatment can I start with?

The map accompanying the study indicates a clear disparity in the density of health conversations among Arab countries, a disparity that reflects not only the spread of artificial intelligence, but also differing community needs, ease of access to healthcare, the level of health awareness, and citizens' trust in their medical systems. It is important to note that the color gradients represent approximate indicators derived from the study, and not an official numerical ranking of countries.
Hence, the most important message is not about who uses artificial intelligence more than others, but why it is used. In some environments, artificial intelligence becomes a temporary substitute for obtaining information, while in other environments it transforms into a smart tool that supports an advanced health system and helps patients access the appropriate service quickly and efficiently. This is the distinction that shapes the future of healthcare in the region.
Why does the Arab citizen ask the machine?

The Arab citizen does not turn to artificial intelligence for a single reason, but for reasons that vary depending on the country and circumstances. They may look for a quick answer in the middle of the night, try to understand a medical test result before a doctor's appointment, inquire about the side effects of a new medication, or ask for an explanation of complex medical terms in language they understand. In some areas, long waiting lists, the distance of health facilities, or the high cost of consultation may be factors driving them to seek an initial answer via chatbots.
These systems also provide a space of privacy that encourages many to ask questions they might hesitate to discuss face-to-face, such as issues related to mental health, obesity, marital problems, and diseases that still carry a social stigma in some communities.
Yet herein lies the real challenge. Artificial intelligence is capable of providing useful medical information, but it does not know the user's complete medical history, all test results, or the medications they are taking, nor can it conduct a physical examination. Therefore, the most dangerous thing a patient can do is turn information into a diagnosis, or general advice into a treatment decision.
Consequently, the future of health artificial intelligence in the Arab world does not depend solely on its mastery of the Arabic language, but on its ability to understand local dialects, cultural context, circulating medication names, national health systems, and most importantly, knowing when to answer and when to advise the user to consult a doctor or emergency department.
Saudi Arabia... Utilizing technology from a position of strength
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the picture appears different from environments where artificial intelligence becomes a substitute for a weak health system. The Kingdom is undertaking one of the largest health transformation operations globally, as part of the Health Sector Transformation Program stemming from 'Saudi Vision 2030', with the aim of building a system focused on prevention, improving quality of life, facilitating access to services, accelerating digital transformation, and empowering patients to receive more efficient and sustainable care.
