Today, the office of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in Al-Qunfudhah Governorate, in cooperation with the General Irrigation Organization, began discharging approximately 7 million cubic meters of water from the Wadi Qanunah dam by opening the dam's gates for a period of 20 days, with the aim of meeting farmers' needs and raising the groundwater level in wells adjacent to the valley's course.

The discharge process is being conducted in coordination with the relevant authorities to ensure the smooth flow of water and to safeguard lives and property.

Objectives of the discharge and support for the agricultural season

Eng. Waleed Al-Daghees, Director of the Makkah Region Branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, explained that the operation aims to irrigate agricultural lands located along the banks of the valley and replenish groundwater wells, which are a main source for the sustainability of farms in the region, thereby contributing to supporting the agricultural season and improving crop productivity.

He pointed out that Wadi Qanunah includes a number of farms producing local crops, including sesame and sorghum, in addition to vegetables and tropical fruits such as mangoes.

The role of the dam in development and village protection

Eng. Al-Daghees noted that the valley originates from the slopes of the Sarawat Mountains, passes through the villages of Beni Bahir center in Al-Aridiyat Governorate, and Sabt Al-Jarah center in Al-Qunfudhah Governorate, reaching its mouth in the Red Sea.

In the same context, the Wadi Qanunah dam contributes to protecting neighboring villages and centers from the risks of torrents, in addition to serving developmental and agricultural purposes in the centers of Khamis Harb, Sabt Al-Jarah, Ahad Beni Zaid, and their affiliated villages.
