The National Center for Environmental Compliance in Saudi Arabia issued 557 violations for non-compliance with the procedural guide for dust control in Riyadh, with penalties exceeding 16 million Saudi riyals.

The center aims through imposing fines to raise the level of compliance with environmental requirements and improve air quality around projects within the urban area.

Environmental Compliance in Saudi Arabia launched a campaign last February in cooperation with the Royal Commission for Riyadh City and the Riyadh Municipality, during which field teams conducted more than 3,000 tours of construction projects.

The same campaign observed non-compliance by a number of construction projects with the approved procedures to reduce dust emissions, which include applying emission control measures during construction works, such as installing air quality monitoring devices on sites, spraying dust suppressants, covering transport trucks, and adhering to transport movement according to the technical guide requirements.

In a related context, the center revealed that the observed violations resulted from monitoring activities based on analysis of air quality indicators from monitoring stations, reports from citizens in neighborhoods adjacent to projects, and round-the-clock periodic inspector tours.

Environmental Compliance noted that the monitored sites saw a response from violators to work on stopping dust triggers at the site and to implement the requirements of the procedural guide published on the website of the center and the Royal Commission for Riyadh City.
