Green Middle East Initiative Discusses Planting 35.4 Billion Trees

The Executive Committee of the Green Middle East Initiative held its twentieth meeting yesterday via video link, with the participation of officials from member states, to follow up on the implementation of decisions of the second meeting of the Ministerial Council, hosted by the Kingdom in Jeddah on January 29, 2026. The meeting reviewed the latest data received from member states, where the total targets amounted to planting 35.4 billion trees and rehabilitating 99.4 million hectares of degraded land.

The Secretary-General of the Middle East Initiative, Engineer Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al-Turki, presented during the meeting a report covering the most prominent developments achieved by the General Secretariat during the first half of 2026, including the implementation of capacity-building and knowledge transfer programs, strengthening strategic partnerships with regional and international organizations and development finance institutions, in addition to completing the operational preparations for the General Secretariat, and preparing a communication strategy with member states and partners, which included launching the website and the initiative's accounts on social media platforms. The meeting discussed five internal policies to organize the work of the General Secretariat, including the communication and transparency policy, the stakeholder engagement policy, the administrative affairs policy, in addition to a number of regulatory policies aimed at enhancing institutional work efficiency.
