Women Empowerment in Saudi Arabia: 44% in Leadership Positions and 32% in Cybersecurity
The Kingdom, represented by the Secretary-General of the Family Affairs Council, Dr. Maimunah Al Khalil, participated in the proceedings of the ninth session of the OIC Ministerial Conference on Women, held in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan under the theme: 'Social, Economic and Political Empowerment of Women: Challenges and Moving Forward.'
Her Excellency the Secretary-General of the Family Affairs Council, Dr. Maimunah Al Khalil, delivered the Kingdom's address, which highlighted key milestones in women's empowerment in the Kingdom, emphasizing that this empowerment was based on the values of the true Islamic religion that honors women and safeguards their rights, and that Saudi Vision 2030 translated these into policies, legislation, and qualitative programs that contributed to enhancing women's participation in various fields. The percentage of women's participation in the labor market rose to approximately 36%, with a target to raise it to 40% by 2030, and their representation in middle and senior administrative positions exceeded 44%. Women also accounted for 32% of workers in the cybersecurity field and 34% in the information and communications technology sector.
The address also referred to an initiative launched by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister – may God protect him – following which the Human Rights Council in Geneva adopted by consensus an international resolution submitted by the Kingdom on women's empowerment in cybersecurity.
In a related context, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was approved as Vice-President of the Bureau of the Ninth OIC Ministerial Conference, which was chaired by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, while the Arab Republic of Egypt assumed the role of Rapporteur, and Palestine served as a permanent member of the Bureau.
The conference proceedings also saw the Kingdom crowned with a new achievement, represented by the winning of the (ELEVATE) initiative of the Center for Achieving Gender Balance at the Institute of Public Administration the OIC Women's Achievement Award (third edition) for the Arab group, in recognition of its contributions to enhancing women's participation in technology and digital transformation fields.
The representation of the Family Affairs Council for the Kingdom in the conference proceedings reaffirms its role in representing the Kingdom in relevant regional and international forums, highlighting its efforts to support and empower women, and enhancing cooperation with member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
